Swimming Pool Construction Cost in Bali (2026): Real Prices by Size and Type

Almost every villa built in Bali gets a pool — it is the single feature guests filter by, and the difference between a villa that books and one that sits. The good news: Bali is one of the cheapest places in the world to build a genuinely good pool. The catch: it is also one of the easiest places to build a bad one, because the tropics punish every shortcut in waterproofing and hydraulics.

Here are the real 2026 numbers, the way we quote them.

Pool cost by size: the honest ranges

For a standard reinforced-concrete pool with proper waterproofing, tiled finish and a working filtration plant:

  • Compact plunge pool (3×5 m): $12,000–18,000. The default for tight Canggu and Seminyak plots.
  • Standard villa pool (4×8 m): $18,000–28,000. The sweet spot for a three-bedroom rental villa.
  • Large family pool (5×12 m): $28,000–45,000.
  • Infinity edge: add $5,000–15,000 over the same-size standard pool — the edge detail, the catch basin and the extra pump are real engineering, not a styling fee. On sloped plots (the classic Bukit cliff view or an Ubud valley edge), the retaining structure under the infinity wall can add as much again.

Rule of thumb inside a full villa project: the pool lands at 8–15% of the total construction budget. Our villa cost calculator includes the pool toggle for exactly this reason.

What the price is made of

A pool quote that can be trusted itemises: excavation and soil disposal; the reinforced-concrete shell (the structure is a water tank first, a lifestyle object second); waterproofing — the layer where cheap pools die; finish (ceramic tile, glass mosaic, or natural stone like sukabumi, Bali's signature green stone); coping and deck; and the plant: pump, filter, pipework, skimmers and lighting. Sukabumi finish runs noticeably more than ceramic but is what most guests picture when they book "a Bali villa".

Salt, chlorine or ionizer?

Manual chlorine dosing is cheapest upfront and most demanding in labour; a salt chlorinator adds roughly $1,500–3,000 at build time and pays it back in lower chemical and labour costs within a few years, with noticeably gentler water. For rental villas we default to salt systems — guests feel the difference and staff make fewer mistakes. Our detailed salt vs chemical dosing cost analysis runs the ten-year numbers.

Running costs nobody quotes you

Budget $100–200 per month for a standard villa pool: electricity for the pump (the biggest line — size the pump correctly and put it on a timer), chemicals or salt, and a technician visit or two. An oversized pump on a small pool is the most common silent money leak we find in villa audits.

The three traps in Bali pool quotes

1. "Waterproofing included" without a system name. Ask exactly what membrane or cementitious system is used and how many coats. Repairing a leaking shell later means emptying the pool, re-tiling and weeks of downtime — a four-figure repair for a three-figure saving.

2. The shell-only price. Some quotes exclude the plant, the deck or even the finish. Compare quotes only on a like-for-like itemised scope.

3. No structural engineering on sloped plots. A pool is tons of water; on a slope it needs designed retaining structure, not optimism. This is a place to be boring.

Do you even need a big pool?

For rentals, data beats ego: listings filter on "private pool", not pool size. A well-shot 4×8 m pool with a clean deck outperforms a tired 12-metre one. Spend the difference on the finish and the loungers — they are in every photo; the extra metres are not.
